El-Obeid, Sudan – The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group in Sudan, have intensified their attacks on villages in North Kordofan, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region’s capital, el-Obeid. The violence has driven tens of thousands of displaced people to seek refuge in the city, overwhelming local resources.
On June 25, residents of Kazkeel village were jolted awake by machinegun fire as RSF fighters stormed in on motorbikes, burning homes and farms and firing artillery at fleeing civilians. Hamisa, a 60-year-old mother of seven, described the horror: “They killed six young men in front of us as we escaped. We left with nothing but the clothes on our backs.” Her family fled to a nearby village before reaching el-Obeid on July 15.
Sudan’s civil war, pitting the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) against the RSF since April 2023, has already created the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Recent RSF raids in North Kordofan, a strategically vital region, have worsened the situation, with reports of entire families burned alive and pregnant women and children shot dead, according to Emergency Lawyers, a local monitoring group.
In el-Obeid, under SAF control, displaced families like Hamisa’s are struggling to survive in overcrowded shelters with limited access to food and clean water. The influx of refugees has strained the city’s capacity, deepening the humanitarian emergency.
The RSF’s recent actions, including seizing a key zone near Egypt and Libya and killing approximately 300 people in North Kordofan, have drawn international concern. As peace talks loom, the violence underscores the urgent need for a resolution to Sudan’s devastating conflict.
