Marjorie Taylor Greene Condemns Gaza 'Genocide,' Highlights Republican Divide

Washington, DC – In a surprising shift, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, a prominent right-wing ally of US President Donald Trump, has publicly accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, exposing a deepening rift within the Republican Party over Israel’s actions in the region.

In a social media post this week, Greene decried the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where an Israeli-imposed blockade has led to widespread starvation, claiming over 120 lives. “It’s the most truthful and easiest thing to say that Oct 7th in Israel was horrific and all hostages must be returned, but so is the genocide, humanitarian crisis, and starvation happening in Gaza,” Greene wrote, aligning her remarks with assessments from human rights groups and United Nations experts who have described Israel’s actions as consistent with genocide.

Greene’s comments stand out in a political landscape where criticism of Israel has predominantly come from the left. As a leading figure in Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, her stance marks a rare departure from the Republican Party’s typically unwavering support for Israel. The Israeli military campaign in Gaza has resulted in over 60,000 deaths and reduced much of the territory to rubble, intensifying international calls to denounce the blockade restricting basic supplies.

Greene also criticized her Republican colleague, Congressman Randy Fine, who has openly supported Israel’s actions, including the starvation campaign. Fine, a Trump-endorsed politician backed by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), sparked outrage with a recent social media post stating, “Release the hostages. Until then, starve away.” His remarks followed a history of inflammatory comments, including a 2021 response to a photo of a dead Palestinian child, where he wrote, “Quite well, actually! Thanks for the pic!” In September 2024, Fine appeared to praise the killing of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, a US activist shot by Israeli forces in the West Bank, writing, “Throw rocks, get shot. One less #MuslimTerrorist. #FireAway.”

Fine’s statements have drawn condemnation even from pro-Israel groups. The American Jewish Committee (AJC) called his remarks “unacceptable,” stating, “Implying that starvation is a legitimate tactic is unacceptable. All those in need of humanitarian aid should receive it promptly and safely.” Greene warned that Fine’s rhetoric could fuel anti-Semitism, further highlighting the growing tension within the party.

The US continues to provide Israel with billions in military aid and diplomatic support, though the Trump administration has been reluctant to criticize Israel’s actions in Gaza. As images of emaciated Palestinian children circulate, pressure mounts on US lawmakers to address the crisis. Democratic Congressman John Garamendi echoed Greene’s concerns, stating, “It’s impossible to look at the starvation caused by Israel’s dangerous and willful failure to enable humanitarian aid and not see a genocide being committed against the people of Palestine.”

The controversy underscores a rare fracture in Republican unity, with Greene’s remarks signaling a potential shift in how some MAGA-aligned figures view the Israel-Palestine conflict, even as others, like Fine, double down on inflammatory rhetoric.
