Charges Framed Against Former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman and 7 Others in Chankharpul Killing of 6 During July Uprising
Dhaka, July 14, 2025 – The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) has formally framed charges against eight individuals, including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman, in a case involving crimes against humanity related to the killing of six people in Dhaka’s Chankharpul area during the July 2024 mass uprising. The tribunal, led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder, along with Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury, passed the order on Monday.The tribunal dismissed the defense's plea for discharge and proceeded with framing charges against the accused for the incident that occurred on August 5, 2024. The accused, apart from Habibur Rahman, include former DMP Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, former Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ramna Zone Shah Alam Md. Akhtarul Islam, former Assistant Commissioner of Ramna Zone Mohammad Imrul, former Inspector (Operations) of Shahbagh Police Station Md. Arshad Hossain, and constables Md. Sujon Hossain, Imaz Hossain, and Md. Nasirul Islam. Of the eight accused, the first four—Habibur Rahman, Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, Shah Alam Md. Akhtarul Islam, and Mohammad Imrul—are currently absconding. The other four—Arshad Hossain, Sujon Hossain, Imaz Hossain, and Nasirul Islam—have been arrested and were produced before the tribunal on Monday. The tribunal has set August 10, 2025, for the opening statements, where the main details of the case will be presented. The date for recording witness testimonies has been fixed for August 11, 2025.
