In a chilling incident that underscores the deteriorating national security for minority communities in Bangladesh, a 25-year-old Hindu woman was raped by Fazar Ali, a local BNP worker, in Baharchar Pachkitta village, Ramchandrapur South Union, Muradnagar, Cumilla, on the night of Thursday, June 26, 2025. The victim, visiting her parental home, filed a rape case against the accused at Muradnagar Police Station on Friday, June 27, amplifying fears of systemic vulnerabilities for minorities since the new government’s formation.
According to the complaint, Fazar Ali, son of Shahid Miah from Purbo Para, Baharchar Pachkitta, and an aspiring union BNP leader, forcibly entered the victim’s home around 10 PM after she refused to open the door. He allegedly broke the door and raped her, exploiting the absence of immediate help. This incident follows a disturbing pattern of assaults targeting minority communities, particularly since the recent change in government, which has left many feeling increasingly unprotected.
Shwarasati Barman, the victim’s aunt, noted that a Hindu religious ceremony was taking place nearby during the attack. Alerted by suspicious noises, she summoned neighbors, who found the door shattered and rescued the victim. Local resident Sajib witnessed Fazar Ali committing the crime and alleged that the accused has a history of misconduct, using his BNP affiliations to wield influence.
“We are terrified,” said Nakul Barman, the victim’s uncle. “This rape is not an isolated incident. Minorities have faced repeated assaults since the new government took over. Where is our security?” His words echo growing concerns about the state’s failure to protect vulnerable groups, with reports of targeted violence against minorities escalating in recent months.
Muradnagar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Zahidur Rahman, confirmed the rape case and stated, “Operations are underway to apprehend the accused. We aim to bring him to justice soon.” However, Fazar Ali could not be reached for comment, and the incident has fueled demands for stronger national policies to safeguard minority communities.
This rape case is a stark reminder of the urgent need for Bangladesh to address the systemic erosion of security for its minority populations, particularly in the wake of recent political shifts.
