Six Killed, 18 Injured in Afghanistan Coal Mine Collapse

Kabul, July 23, 2025 – At least six miners were killed and 18 others injured in a coal mine collapse in northern Afghanistan’s Baghlan province on Tuesday, local authorities reported.

According to AFP, citing local officials, the incident occurred in the Baghlan region, where a similar coal mine collapse in February 2022 claimed at least 10 lives. Syed Mustafa Hashimi, head of the provincial Information and Culture office, told AFP that a section of the mine “suddenly collapsed,” resulting in the casualties. The injured have been hospitalized, though the severity of their injuries was not disclosed.

Afghanistan is rich in resources, mining not only coal but also marble, minerals, gold, lithium, and precious stones. However, the industry operates with minimal oversight, leading to frequent and deadly accidents. Miners often work without adequate safety equipment, exacerbating the risks.
In a previous incident in December 2024, 22 workers were trapped in a coal mine collapse in Samangan province but were rescued after several hours. The recurring accidents highlight the urgent need for improved safety measures in Afghanistan’s mining sector.[](https://tribune.com.pk/story/2557290/six-killed-in-afghanistan-coal-mine-collapse)
