Protests erupted in Southern California’s farm country as federal immigration raids intensified, reshaping daily life in one of America’s most populous regions. The crackdowns, which began in June, have sparked violent clashes, prompted military deployments, and forced many of the estimated 1.4 million undocumented immigrants in the area into hiding. In a tragic incident at a cannabis farm, Jaime Alanis, a worker, fell from a greenhouse roof while attempting to evade immigration agents. He suffered a broken neck and fractured skull, later dying in hospital. During the same raid, immigration officers fired teargas at approximately 500 protesters gathered to oppose the operation, some of whom threw rocks, with the FBI reporting one individual fired a gun at federal agents.
The raids, described as the largest immigration operation since President Donald Trump took office, resulted in the detention of 361 migrants, including four with serious criminal records for offences such as rape and kidnapping. Authorities also reported rescuing 14 migrant children from potential exploitation and trafficking. However, many detainees are long-term residents with no criminal history, caught in sweeping enforcement actions.
Carlos, a Guatemalan immigrant who withheld his full name out of fear, described the climate of terror: “If I’m brown, if I’m Hispanic, they just come and catch you.” His sister, Emma, was detained while selling tacos outside a Home Depot. A federal judge recently ordered the Trump administration to halt “indiscriminate” detentions, but Carlos remains too afraid to work, worrying about rent.
The raids have disrupted Southern California’s vibrant communities. Businesses have closed, public events, including Fourth of July celebrations, have been cancelled, and once-bustling parks and streets are eerily quiet. A street vendor in Los Angeles remarked, “It’s never like this,” as she served customers on a nearly deserted Sunday.
Churches and advocacy groups are stepping in, organising food deliveries and using apps and social media to warn of nearby immigration patrols. When federal agents descended on MacArthur Park in armoured vehicles and on horseback, protesters, including Mayor Karen Bass, confronted them. No arrests were made, as the park was largely empty except for protesters and a few others.
Activists, like Betsy Bolte, who protested at MacArthur Park, call the raids a “war against the people” and accuse the government of terrorising communities. The advocacy group CAUSE condemned the Trump administration for “weaponising” federal forces against Californians. However, not all residents oppose the crackdowns. A recent BBC report highlighted a Trump supporter, detained as an undocumented immigrant, who still backs his deportation policies.
Stephen Miller, a senior White House aide from Santa Monica, defended the operations, accusing California’s “violent” Democratic leaders of inciting unrest. Trump’s “border tsar,” Tom Homan, blamed Los Angeles’s sanctuary city policies for forcing public raids, stating that cooperation with local jails would allow quieter detentions. “We’re going to double down, triple down on sanctuary cities,” Homan vowed.
The human toll is evident. Pastor Ara Torosian of Cornerstone Church in West LA reported that five congregants, including a couple detained outside court with their young daughter, were apprehended in June. “They are not criminals,” he said, pleading with agents as he filmed.
As fear permeates communities, many immigrants avoid work, school, or even court hearings, with some detained outside courthouses. Huntington Park, one of 88 cities in LA County, cancelled summer events, citing residents’ “fear and uncertainty.” The region’s once-lively streets now reflect a community in retreat, grappling with an uncertain future.
