UK’s Starmer to Discuss Gaza Crisis with Trump in Scotland Meeting

London, July 27, 2025: UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is set to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza during a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Scotland on Monday, July 28, 2025. The talks, occurring at Trump’s Turnberry golf resort in South Ayrshire, come amid growing international pressure on Israel to address starvation in Gaza and facilitate a ceasefire.

Starmer is expected to commend U.S. efforts to broker a ceasefire and urge further action to secure an urgent agreement. Recent negotiations in Qatar collapsed this week after the U.S. and Israel withdrew their teams, with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff accusing Hamas of failing to negotiate in good faith. Trump, who arrived in Scotland on Friday, stated last week that Hamas “didn’t really want to make a deal,” adding that alternative options are being explored to secure hostage releases and stabilize Gaza.

Israel announced new aid measures on Sunday, including an airdrop of seven pallets containing sugar, flour, and canned food, with Jordan, the UAE, and Egypt also delivering aid via air and land routes. However, aid agencies have dismissed these efforts as insufficient, with the UN’s Philippe Lazzarini calling airdrops “inefficient and dangerous” and emphasizing that only unimpeded land deliveries can address Gaza’s needs. The UN reports 6,000 trucks of aid are stuck at borders, while the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry states 127 people, mostly children, have died from malnutrition since the conflict began in October 2023. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy stressed that while airdrops may ease some suffering, “unhindered” access for aid trucks is the only sustainable solution. Government minister James Murray, speaking on BBC Breakfast, called the Gaza situation “utterly horrifying” and condemned starvation as a weapon of war. Starmer confirmed the UK is collaborating with Jordan on airdrops and accelerating efforts to evacuate Gaza’s children for medical treatment in the UK. He plans to convene the cabinet next week, during Parliament’s recess, to address the crisis. The controversial U.S.-Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), established in May after an 11-week Israeli blockade, has drawn sharp criticism. The UN reports over 1,000 Palestinians have been killed at GHF distribution sites, forced to navigate combat zones for aid. Israel denies restricting aid and claims the GHF prevents supplies from reaching Hamas, though the UN awaits evidence to support these claims. Starmer faces domestic and international pressure to recognize a Palestinian state, with over a third of MPs and French President Emmanuel Macron advocating for it. The SNP plans to introduce a bill in September to force a vote on Palestinian statehood. However, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch argued that recognition now would “reward” Hamas for its October 7, 2023, attack, which killed 1,200 Israelis and took 251 hostages. Israel’s subsequent military campaign has killed at least 59,676 people in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry.
Trump’s visit also includes meetings with EU chief Ursula von der Leyen and Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney. As the Gaza crisis deepens, with one in three residents facing days without food, Starmer’s discussions with Trump will be critical in pushing for a ceasefire and addressing the humanitarian catastrophe.
