UK Lawmakers Urge PM Keir Starmer to Recognize Palestinian State Amid Gaza Crisis

London, UK – Over 200 British lawmakers from across the political spectrum have called on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to recognize a Palestinian state, as public outrage grows over Israel’s ongoing war and blockade in Gaza, which has triggered a severe starvation crisis. The demand was made in an open letter signed by 221 Members of Parliament (MPs) on Friday, July 25, 2025, ahead of a United Nations conference on Palestine scheduled for next week.

The letter, supported by MPs from nine political parties—including Labour, Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, Scottish National Party (SNP), and the Greens—urges Starmer’s Labour government to outline a clear timeline and strategy for recognizing a Palestinian state and advancing the two-state solution. “We are expectant that the outcome of the conference will be the UK Government outlining when and how it will act on its long-standing commitment on a two-state solution; as well as how it will work with international partners to make this a reality,” the letter stated. It emphasized the UK’s influential role due to its historical ties to the region and its position as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Labour MP Sarah Champion highlighted the cross-party support for the initiative, reflecting growing public anger in the UK and globally over Israel’s bombardment and blockade of Gaza. The letter follows widespread protests, including a pro-Palestinian demonstration outside Downing Street in London on Thursday, July 24, 2025, demanding that the British government pressure Israel to end its military campaign in Gaza. The call for recognition comes a day after French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France would formally recognize the State of Palestine at the UN in September 2025, adding to the international momentum for Palestinian statehood. The UK lawmakers’ letter underscores the urgency of addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where starvation and displacement have worsened, and presses Starmer to take concrete steps toward fulfilling the UK’s commitment to a two-state solution.
