Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has implemented cutting-edge AI technology to reduce MRI scan times, enabling staff to treat more patients efficiently. The Air Recon Deep Learning (ARDL) software, installed at Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital, uses advanced algorithms to minimize background noise, producing sharper images in less time. The technology will soon be rolled out to Scunthorpe General Hospital and Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby.
Karen Bunker, head of imaging, explained, "This technology allows us to cut scan times on certain sequences while maintaining high-quality imaging." Routine MRI head scans, previously taking 30 minutes, now take just 20 minutes, while prostate scans have been reduced from 45 to 30 minutes. The trust reports that it can now scan 31 lumbar spine patients in a 12-hour period, up from 21. The shorter scan times have significantly improved patient experiences, particularly for those with claustrophobia or learning disabilities, who are now better able to tolerate the process. Additionally, fewer children require general anaesthesia for scans. Hospital bosses say the technology is transforming patient care and increasing efficiency across their facilities.
