Spanish police have indicated that Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota was likely driving at excessive speed when his Lamborghini crashed on a motorway in northwestern Spain, resulting in the deaths of Jota, 28, and his brother André Silva, 25. The accident occurred early last Thursday on the A52 motorway near Palacios de Sanabria in Zamora province, following a suspected tyre blowout.
According to the Guardia Civil, the vehicle was overtaking when it veered off the road and burst into flames. Traffic police in Zamora noted that tyre marks, visible approximately 100 metres from the crash site, suggest Jota was driving at a speed exceeding the road’s 120km/h (75mph) limit. While there were initial reports of uneven asphalt at the site, police have stated the road was not a known accident “black spot” and should have been manageable even at higher speeds. The investigation has been complicated by the intense fire that nearly destroyed the car, but all evidence so far points to Jota as the driver. An expert report is being prepared for the courts. The crash occurred 11 days after Jota married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, in Portugal. The couple, who had three children, were mourned at a funeral in their hometown of Gondomar, near Porto, over the weekend. Jota and his brother were travelling to Santander, Spain, so Jota could return to Liverpool for pre-season training. Tributes have poured in for the Portuguese striker, with fans, teammates, and Liverpool Football Club honouring his memory. Players have begun returning to the club’s training ground, where respects continue to be paid to Jota, described by many as a “symbol of hope and inspiration” for Portugal.Tuesday, July 8, 2025
