Bayern Munich's star playmaker, Jamal Musiala, is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after sustaining a broken leg and dislocated ankle during a Club World Cup match against Paris St-Germain. The 22-year-old was stretchered off in agony during the first half following a collision with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The incident occurred as Musiala chased a ball near the byeline, only to be caught by Donnarumma’s challenge. The young midfielder, who had earlier scored a hat-trick in Bayern’s opening Club World Cup game against Auckland City, was visibly distraught, covering his face with his shirt as he was carried off the pitch. He was immediately taken to hospital for assessment and has since returned to Munich for surgery. Bayern’s sporting director, Max Eberl, described the injury as a “real shock” for the club, highlighting Musiala’s pivotal role in the team. “This hits FC Bayern hard,” Eberl said. “Jamal is immensely important to our game, and the human impact is incredibly bitter. We will support him intensively and be by his side.” The challenge sparked controversy, with Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer labelling Donnarumma’s actions “risky” and criticising the Italian’s initial lack of response. “Fairness is always important,” Neuer said, noting that he urged Donnarumma to check on Musiala at half-time. Donnarumma later posted on social media, offering his “prayers and well wishes” to Musiala. The injury adds to Bayern’s woes after their defeat to a nine-man PSG side in the Club World Cup quarter-final.
