At Least 50 Injured in Violent Clash Between Two Villages in Habiganj, Section 144 Imposed

At least 50 people were injured in a violent clash between residents of Anmanu and Timirpur villages in Nabiganj Upazila, Habiganj, Bangladesh, on Monday (July 7) afternoon, triggered by a prior dispute. The conflict led to vandalism and looting of shops in various parts of the town, prompting the local administration to impose Section 144 to restore order.

According to eyewitnesses, the clash stemmed from an altercation on Friday between Khasru Mia from Timirpur village and Ashahid Ali Asha from Inatganj Union, which escalated into a physical confrontation. Some residents of Anmanu village supported Asha, intensifying tensions. On Monday, armed with local weapons, residents of both villages engaged in an hour-long clash, throwing stones and chasing each other. The violence resulted in the vandalism and looting of at least 10-12 shops, including United Hospital, Hashembag Hotel, and the fish market. Approximately 50 injured individuals were admitted to Nabiganj Upazila Health Complex and Habiganj Sadar Modern Hospital. The identities of the injured have not been immediately disclosed. Police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and army personnel were deployed to the scene, successfully bringing the situation under control. The administration imposed Section 144 to prevent further unrest. Nabiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sheikh Mohammad Kamruzzaman told the media, “Tensions had been brewing for three days, culminating in Monday’s clash. No written complaints have been filed yet, but action will be taken once complaints are received.” Nabiganj Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Md. Ruhul Amin told Dhaka Post, “Law enforcement acted swiftly after the clash. The situation is now under control, and Section 144 has been imposed to maintain peace. Strict action will be taken against anyone attempting to disrupt order.” **Additional News:** On the fourth day of the HSC examinations, 43 students and 4 teachers were expelled for alleged cheating during exams for subjects including Information and Communication Technology, English First Paper, Accounting, Chemistry, and Economics.
