Harvard Accused of Civil Rights Violations Against Jewish Students by Trump Administration

The Trump administration has accused Harvard University of violating civil rights laws due to its handling of Israeli and Jewish students, potentially jeopardizing the university’s federal funding. In a letter to Harvard President Alan Garber, the administration criticized the university for “deliberate indifference” toward Jewish students who reported feeling threatened on campus.

The letter, seen by the BBC, warns that Harvard risks losing all federal financial resources unless it implements immediate changes. It cites incidents including Jewish students being spat on or assaulted, antisemitic imagery such as a dollar sign within a Star of David, and stickers depicting an Israeli flag with a swastika. The administration claims these reflect a “demographic hierarchy” at Harvard, where individuals are judged by group identity rather than merit, allowing antisemitism to “fester.”

Harvard strongly disputes the findings, stating it has taken “substantive, proactive steps” to combat antisemitism and made “significant strides” against discrimination. The university highlighted efforts such as expanded non-discrimination policies, enhanced antisemitism training, and facilitated dialogue to address campus tensions. This notice of violation follows heightened tensions between Harvard and the Trump administration, which has intensified scrutiny of universities over antisemitism amid protests related to the Gaza conflict. In May, the administration initiated a review of Harvard’s federal grants, estimated at $100 million, and previously froze $2.65 billion in funding while attempting to revoke Harvard’s ability to enroll international students. Columbia University received a similar notice last month for alleged failures to protect Jewish students.
The dispute underscores ongoing clashes, with Harvard acknowledging campus polarization over the Gaza war in an April internal report. President Garber apologized for instances where the university fell short of community expectations. The outcome of this conflict could significantly impact Harvard’s operations and funding.
